A comp is a comparable sale for a similar card. The best comp is not simply the same player. It is the same or closely matched year, set, card number, parallel, grade, and condition.
Write a precise search phrase
Start with player, year, product, card number, parallel, serial number, autograph or relic status, grading company, and grade. Remove details you cannot verify rather than guessing.
Use sold listings first
Active listings show asking prices. Completed sales show stronger evidence of what buyers recently paid. Save several recent matches and note auction versus fixed-price format, shipping, and best-offer information.
Reject weak comps
- A different parallel, grade, or serial-number range.
- A multi-card lot instead of a single card.
- A damaged, altered, or poorly described card.
- An unusually old sale in a fast-moving player market.
Build a range
Use several comparable sales, remove obvious outliers, and place your card near the low, middle, or high end based on condition and demand. Then record the research date because card prices change.
