Scanning a large collection works best as a triage system. The goal is not to solve every difficult card immediately. First create clean records, separate uncertain results, and spend deeper research time on the cards that matter.
Sort before scanning
Separate cards by sport, era, player, condition, or storage box. Remove duplicate bulk cards and photograph one card at a time. Keep valuable-looking cards away from a mixed pile.
Use three result groups
- Confirmed: identity looks right and the card can be saved.
- Needs review: base, parallel, grade, or card number is uncertain.
- Manual research: rare, vintage, damaged, altered, or high-value cards.
Save useful records, not guesses
Record the card identity, condition, storage location, and research date. A confident-looking wrong identification can create more work later than a clearly marked unknown card.
